Workshop Venue

The Archive '10 workshop will be held in Room 3760 of the Warnock Engineering Building (WEB) on the University of Utah campus.

If you drive a car to the workshop venue, you should park in the lot that is north of the Merrill Engineering Building (MEB). (The Merrill Engineering Building is northwest of the WEB; see the maps.) You will need a temporary parking permit to park in this lot. Contact the workshop organizers for details.

Hotels

We recommend that workshop participants stay at the University Guest House.

University Guest House

Special attendee room rate: We have a block of rooms reserved at the Guest House for Archive '10 participants. The cost per room is $89 per night plus tax (11.6%). This rate is available for the nights of May 24, 25, and 26, and it is available for single- or double-occupancy rooms. To make a reservation, please contact the hotel directly. Mention the Archive 2010 Workshop to receive the special rate.

  • Please make your reservation no later than May 10. Rooms and the special rate are guaranteed only through May 10.

The University Guest House is located on the University of Utah campus, in the Chapel Glen area of the former Fort Douglas. This is a scenic and quiet area, now preserved as a historic site by the University. The Guest House features 134 rooms equipped with refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, voice mail, Ethernet access, cable TV, and daily housekeeping. A complimentary continental-style breakfast is offered daily in the lobby.

Because the Guest House is located on the University grounds, one can easily walk to anywhere on campus, or travel on the University campus shuttle.

  • It is a nice but fairly long walk from the Guest House to the Warnock Engineering Building. Allocate at least 15 minutes for the trip.
  • If you are in a rush, you might choose to drive to the Warnock Engineering Building instead.
  • If you do not want to walk or drive, it is a 15-minute ride on the campus shuttle (blue route) from the Guest House to the Warnock Engineering Building.

There are no commercial establishments anywhere near the Guest House. To get to restaurants or downtown attractions, you will need to travel by car, taxi, or TRAX (Salt Lake City's light-rail system). If you want some exercise, however, the Guest House is near some nice strolling in the old part of Fort Douglas, and one could walk right up into the foothills.

Arriving in Salt Lake City

Most visitors to Salt Lake City will arrive via the Salt Lake City International Airport. The airport is west of the Salt Lake City downtown area; the University of Utah is east of the downtown area. To get to the University or downtown area, you will need to rent a car, take a taxi or shuttle, or take public transportation (meaning bus, not TRAX).

See the airport's ground transportation page.

  • A taxi from the airport to the University Guest House is approximately $20.
  • An Express Shuttle trip from the airport to the Guest House is $12. This is a special rate for the Guest House.
  • An Express Shuttle trip from the airport to elsewhere on the University of Utah campus is $18.

Traveling in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City is organized on a grid, so it is easy to navigate by car. You can also get around the city via taxis, public buses, or light rail. On the University of Utah campus, you can get around by walking, by car, or via the campus shuttle system.

Car

Note: North Temple Viaduct Closed! Even if you are already familiar with driving in Salt Lake City, you may want to read the driving directions below. The directions let you avoid the closure of the "North Temple Viaduct," which is a common route between the Salt Lake City airport and downtown. The North Temple Viaduct will be closed until late 2011.

To reach the University Guest House by car from the airport:

  • Exiting the airport, follow the signs for I-80 East towards the city. You will be headed east, towards the mountains and the downtown area. After a short drive, I-80 will turn right (to the south).
  • Take Exit 121 to get to 600 South Street. Merge onto 600 South Street. You will again be headed east, toward the mountains.
  • Stay on 600 South Street into the city, until you come to State Street (which is the same as 100 East Street).
  • Turn left onto State Street, and go two blocks to 400 South Street.
  • Turn right onto 400 South Street. You should again be headed east, toward the mountains.
  • On 400 South south, continue east. The road becomes 500 South Street as you approach the University.
  • Continue on 500 South Street and turn left onto Mario Capecchi Drive (formerly called Wasatch Drive).
  • Turn right at the first traffic light onto South Campus/Hempstead Road.
  • Take the second left onto Fort Douglas Boulevard, and follow the road to the Guest House.

TRAX

TRAX is the Salt Lake Valley’s light-rail system. The University Guest House is situated adjacent to one of the stops on the University TRAX line, near the end of the route. The other end of the route is near the EnergySolutions Arena in downtown Salt Lake City. Via TRAX, you can easily get to downtown restaurants and attractions.

Tickets for TRAX are sold from vending machines at all TRAX stops.

Campus Shuttle

The University of Utah operates a campus shuttle system during the day (6:00 AM to 6:00 PM). Two routes go by the University Guest House.

The campus shuttle system is free for passengers.
